Geoff's Public Works

Whalemina

This 25 foot long fiberglass structure originally lived in the Central Park Children's Zoo from 1961-1995 when it was retired to the beach. It was originally simply grey and weather-beaten. To renovate it, I designed undersea imagery and used stained glass, broken pottery, tile, and other found objects to mosaic the entire exterior surface, creating a completely new artwork. Thanks to the support of NYC Parks Conservancy and Benjamin Beechwood, LLC, the Rockaway Artists Alliance was able to to pay young artists to assist in this project. Special thanks must go to all the community residents who volunteered their assistance and raw materials.

Dragon Boat (Dragonfly's Banquet)

This 25 foot long raft was originally designed by David Perlman (aka Poppa Neutrino) and built in the 1990s from found lumber, styrofoam, and other scavenged materials. It arrived in Jamaica bay one dark winter night in the late 1990s. Since then a talented crew has continuosly maintained and upgraded her in various ways. I have personally overseen the renovation of the original artwork and added some of my own. She may be seen cruising Jamaica Bay, just look for the crowd of incredulous onlookers.

Tribute Park Gates

These wrought-iron gates are the entranceway to Rockaways Tribute Park, Beach 116th Street at Beach Channel Drive. I was commissioned to design these unique and ornate pieces to reflect Jamaica Bay's natural environment. Tim Bracci fabricated the actual gates from sheets of metal, using a plasma gun to cut the design that I had drawn on them. They were then painted and installed by his company.
